FWF ASTRA Award for Anne Miller

Congratulations to Anne Miller, who has been awarded the ASTRA Prize by the Austrian Science Fund FWF! The prize is endowed with approximately one million euros and supports outstanding scientific projects with high innovative potential. She receives the award for her research on the spatial organization of biochemical processes within cells.

Anne Miller completed her PhD at the University of Vienna and subsequently conducted research as a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard Medical School. Since 2023, she is a junior research group leader at the Center for Pathobiochemistry and Genetics at the Medical University of Vienna.

In her award-winning project, Anne challenges a long-standing paradigm in cell biology: While mitochondria are widely known as the “powerhouses” of the cell, the nucleus is traditionally viewed as a genetic but metabolically inactive control center. However, emerging evidence suggests that metabolic processes also take place within the nucleus, where they may play a crucial role in regulating key cellular decisions.

Using liver regeneration as a model, Anne and her team investigate which metabolic pathways are active in the nucleus and how they influence cellular behavior. To uncover these previously hidden processes, the team is developing innovative high-resolution techniques that allow for the spatial mapping and manipulation of biochemical activities within the nucleus. These insights have the potential to fundamentally reshape our understanding of cellular metabolism and open up new avenues for biomedical research. We wish her the best of luck for her research!
